The capital of Santorini is the beautiful town of Fira. Busy but scenic. It owns the Archaeological Museum of the island and the Museum of Prehistoric Thera, while the whole town boasts a spectacular charming view of the volcano. Oia and Imerovigli, are also known for their romanticism and picturesque allure. There, you can walk through the island-inspired streets, visit the local stores, and of course, praise the impressive views.
A place with powerful historical aura, Akrotiri, is situated in the southern side of Santorini. It is a lovely and scenic village, 10 km away from the capital, and it’s known for one of the most important archaeological discoveries that unveiled the Prehistoric settlement. This discovery dates back to the 18th century, but it was destroyed due to the volcanic eruption. Today, the only projects that take place in this area, aim only for the maintenance of this significant archaeological finding.
One of the most magical spots to observe the Theran sunset lies also in Akrotiri village and it’s the Lighthouse of Akrotiri. Constructed in 1892 with a height that reaches the 10 meters, it is a place that you should definitely see. Whilst wandering around Akrotiri, a visit-worthy site is also the Venetian Castle, located on the top of the settlement. It was built in 1335 and unfortunately, it is partialy saved. Nowadays, it is one of the five castles on the island of Santorini.
Near Akrotiri, you will easily find the Red Beach, the most famous beach due to the unique architecture with the red rocks. Although it is one of the most popular yet crowded beaches in Santorini, the island boasts fairly beautiful shores such as Perissa, Kamari, Perivolos, Vlychada and Monolithos, which are some of the most-visited beaches with clear waters and many visitors choose to take a dive there.
